Statement

The study of architecture and art history led me to the oldest form of representational art: stone carving.
A type of sculpture referred to as bas relief, stone is my preferred medium, representing a state of permanence in an ever changing world.

However, the dichotomy looms large: drop it and it shatters.

Like stone itself, there are many layers of meaning in my work.
A true expression and representation of the natural environment, it embodies time, history of place and our impact on the world.

Iconography, symbiology, abstraction and form, combined with diverse influences, curiosity and the joy of discovery,
inform my artistic expression, which is literally “carved in stone”.  Every stone is purposefully selected for each carving,
to compliment and express the inherent qualities, shape and color of the stone.

The process is an exercise in patience and mindfulness:
As layers of stone are removed by hand, the image slowly reveals itself, unfolding as it is meant to. Just as in life.

As I currently recover from shoulder surgery, my ability to carve has been greatly impacted. “Distinctive Stone Art” better
expresses my transformation as I explore how to work with stone in ways that are kinder and gentler on my shoulder.

I am exploring other mediums including ceramics, printmaking and bas relief in clay, which offer new means of creative expression.
